Directoryz vs WordPress directory plugins

Add a directory to your WordPress site without a directory plugin

WordPress directory plugins turn your WordPress install into the directory: listings become posts in your database, and themes, add-ons, and updates become your job. Directoryz takes the other route. Your WordPress site keeps running as it is, and a hosted directory is served at a path such as yoursite.com/resources, on a subdomain, or on a Directoryz URL. This page sets out when each approach is the better choice.

Two ways to put a directory on a WordPress site

A directory plugin such as Directorist, GeoDirectory, Business Directory Plugin, or HivePress runs inside WordPress. Listings are stored as custom post types in your WordPress database, rendered by your theme or a directory theme, and extended with add-ons for maps, payments, reviews, or claims. Directoryz is a separate hosted service. You manage listings in the Directoryz workspace, and the public directory is served by Directoryz under a URL you choose, so WordPress never loads directory code.

  • Plugin: everything lives in one WordPress install, with full theme and PHP control.
  • Directoryz: WordPress stays your marketing site while the directory runs on its own infrastructure under your domain.

Where WordPress directory plugins are the better choice

Plugins are strong when the directory is the whole business and you want WordPress to be the only system. The mature plugins offer features Directoryz does not have today, and those features matter for many directory types. If your plan depends on any of the items below, start with a plugin and compare its current add-on pricing.

  • Map search and location radius filtering for local business or real-estate style directories.
  • Visitor reviews and star ratings on listings.
  • Listing claims by business owners and recurring listing subscriptions.
  • Deep customisation of templates in PHP, and a large theme and add-on marketplace.

Where Directoryz is the better choice

Directoryz fits teams whose WordPress site already does its job and who want a curated directory next to it without turning the site into a directory application. Typical examples are a SaaS integrations page, an agency's partner or vendor guide, an association member list, or a resource hub. You avoid adding database load, plugin conflicts, and another set of updates to a site the marketing team depends on.

  • No extra plugin, theme, or database tables on the WordPress install.
  • Custom listing fields (text, URL, number, select, yes/no) without custom post type code.
  • Free or paid listing submissions with a review inbox before anything goes live.
  • Lead forms on paid plans, plus view and outbound-click analytics and CSV import and export.

Keeping the directory on your WordPress domain

The question most WordPress owners ask is whether the directory can stay on their own domain for SEO. On paid plans Directoryz can publish at a path such as yoursite.com/resources, a full hostname, or a subdomain such as resources.yoursite.com. Path publishing uses a small Cloudflare Worker that handles only the directory path; every other URL, including wp-admin and your blog, keeps going to your WordPress host. This requires the domain to be on Cloudflare: the one-click setup connects your Cloudflare account, and the manual option gives you the Worker code and route to add yourself. If your DNS is not on Cloudflare, a subdomain with one CNAME record is the simplest option.

05

SEO and page speed

Both approaches can produce indexable listing pages. With a plugin, SEO depends on your theme, your SEO plugin settings, caching, and hosting performance, and large directories can slow down the whole WordPress install. Directoryz renders directory, category, and listing pages on the server with canonical URLs on your domain, page titles and descriptions, structured data, and an XML sitemap for the directory. Because the directory is served separately, a traffic spike on listing pages does not compete with your WordPress server.

06

Cost and upkeep

Many directory plugins have a free core with paid add-ons or bundles for payments, maps, and premium features, plus the cost of hosting that can handle the extra load. You also own updates, backups, and compatibility testing after WordPress and PHP upgrades. Directoryz has a free plan for a Directoryz-hosted directory, and paid plans add custom domains and paths, more directories and listings, paid submissions, and leads. Listing payments go through your own Stripe account, and Directoryz does not take a percentage of them; Stripe's normal fees still apply. Moving from a plugin is usually an export of listings to CSV, a field mapping, and an import.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Directoryz a WordPress plugin?

No. Directoryz is a hosted directory builder. It works alongside a WordPress site by publishing at a path, subdomain, or full hostname, so nothing is installed in WordPress.

Can I put a Directoryz directory at mysite.com/directory on WordPress?

Yes on paid plans, if the domain uses Cloudflare. A scoped Cloudflare Worker serves only that path and sends every other request to your existing WordPress host.

Does Directoryz have maps and reviews like GeoDirectory or Directorist?

Not currently. Directoryz supports a location field but no map search, star ratings, or listing claims. If those are essential, a WordPress directory plugin is the better fit today.

Can I move my listings from a WordPress directory plugin?

Yes. Export your listings to CSV from the plugin or WordPress, then import the file into Directoryz and map columns to core and custom fields.

Will listing pages be indexed on my domain?

Pages are rendered on the server with canonical URLs on your configured domain or path and listed in the directory's sitemap. Indexing itself is always Google's decision.
